Es uno de los parques más activos y animados de la ciudad de Nueva York. En pleno corazón y centro de Greenwich Village, este parque está rodeado por la New York University.

Sus inicios como espacio abierto fueron el establecimiento de un cementerio, lugar de ejecución después y, finalmente a partir del año 1820, parque público.

En la parte norte del parque nos encontramos con el Washington Arch, un arco inspirado en los arcos de triunfo romanos. Esta estructura fue construida en 1889 para celebrar el centenario de la subida al poder de George Washington.

Sustituyó a un arco colindante en la zona, que era una estructura provisional de madera y estuco. Tras hacerse con la aprobación popular, el diseño original de McKim Mead & White fue

reconstruido en mármol en 1891.

Decorado con esculturas de Washington en sus dos atuendos civiles y militares por Alexander Stirling Calder y MacNeil Herman, este arco se convirtió en el símbolo de un nuevo Estados Unidos dedicado a las artes.

En el interior del parque se encuentra la estatua de Garibaldi, el cual vivía en Nueva York en el exilio a principios de 1850. La estatua fue erigida por inmigrantes italianos que comenzaron a poblar la zona sur de la Plaza de la década de 1800.

Washington Square Park, in New York

Parks is one of the most active and lively city of New York. In the heart and center of Greenwich Village, this park is surrounded by New York University.

His beginnings as open space were the establishment of a cemetery, instead of running after and finally from 1820, a public park.

In the northern part of the park we find the Washington Arch, a bow inspired by Roman triumphal arches. This structure was built in 1889 to celebrate the centenary of the rise of George Washington.

It replaced an arc surrounding the area, which was a temporary structure of wood and stucco. Even after winning popular approval, the original design of McKim Mead & White was rebuilt in marble in 1891.

Decorated with sculptures of Washington in its two civilian and military attire Alexander Stirling Calder and Herman MacNeil, this arch became the symbol of a new United States dedicated to the arts.

Inside the park is the statue of Garibaldi, who lived in New York in exile in early 1850. The statue was built by Italian immigrants who began settling the area south of the Plaza in the early 1800′s.
